Papers and correspondence of Leonard Charles Van Noppen, 1660-1921 (bulk 1894-1921).

ArchivalResource

Papers and correspondence of Leonard Charles Van Noppen, 1660-1921 (bulk 1894-1921).

The papers consist chiefly of Van Noppen's notes and manuscripts concerning his study of Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, including English translations of "Samson" and "Lucifer." There are also letters to his family written while he was studying in the Netherlands, 1894-1896; letters to him; poems by him; clippings; a study of Henry Jerome Stockard; and some miscellany. Of interest is a 1916 letter discussing the significance of World War I in history, describing it as a war between ideas, which America will have to enter and which Germany will win. He notes that the majority of Dutch citizens are very anti-German and that a few are profiting. Correspondents, most of whom wrote brief letters of thanks for Van Noppen's books, include Admiral Beresford, Lord Burnham, A. Lawrence Lowell, Walter H. Page, Walter Pulitzer, Benoy Kumar Sarkar, and Andrew D. White. The collection also contain seven engravings by Jakob Houbraken; and a watercolor portrait of Van Noppen in uniform, 1918 July 27, by T. Molkenboer.
