Two men approaching the gate of Lichfield Cathedral, walking toward the heavily carved Gothic facade with saints in niches. Another man walks up steps in a garden in the left. Lettered under the image with the history of the building: 'This Church was founded by Osney King of Northumberland after he had conquered the Mercians, then Pagans & slain Penda their King about the Year 656. Dinna a Scotchman was the first Bishop, but the most eminent was St. Chad, about the Year 793 it was made an Archiopiscopal See by Pope Adrian the first. Adulph being created Arch-Bishop thereof at the request of Offa the great, King of the Mercians, but this Dignity expired at the Death of Offa, for in the Year 803 at a Synod held at Cliveshoo Adulph subscribes himself only Bishop of Litchfield. Roger de Clinton the 37th Bishop of this place took down the Cathedral Church Built by King Osney it being very small and erected the present most Magnificent Structure, in the Year 1148 & dedicated it to the Virgin Mary & St. Chad. Walter de Langton the 49th Bishop erected our Lady's Chappel. This Church haveing suffered great Devastation in the late Civill wars was finaly repaired by the Diligence of John Hackett the then Bishop at the expense of 20000£.'
