Summary: Primarily land grant documents and court records relating to the Slaughter vs. United States case in the Court of Private Land Claims, 1893. These include the 1820 original land grant document as well as translations by Henry O. Flipper. In 1893, the Court of Private Land Claims hired Flipper as a special agent and Spanish expert. Also present are Slaughter's cancelled checks for the period 1908 to 1913; a few business letters; and property tax receipts for property in Mexico.

Biographical note: Rancher; John Slaughter served two terms as Cochise County Sheriff beginning in 1887, served a term in the Arizona Legislature in 1906, helped to develop the town of Douglas, Arizona, and was a stockholder in the Bank of Douglas. In 1883, John Slaughter purchased about 40,000 acres of the San Bernadino Land Grant in southeastern Arizona on the Mexican border. Henry Ossian Flipper (b. March 21, 1856, Thomasville, GA-d. April 26, 1940, Atlanta, GA) was a soldier, engineer, and author. In 1873 he received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, where he became the first African American graduate. Flipper served in the all-Negro 10th Cavalry Regiment in the Southwest and was accused of embezzling funds in 1881.
