Kate L. Hayden diaries, 1896-1899.

Hayden, a Hartford resident, started her series of diaries with an explanation of the value and importance of diaries illustrated by quotes from other diarists and poets. Her entries included notes on the weather, her daily activities, especially going to the library, the books she read, music, poetry, birds, the changing seasons, and the people she met. As the years progress, the entries become shorter and are more concerned with weather. In 1898 and 1899 she frequently mentioned the Connecticut Historical Society, in particular, the "annuals" and the Bates children's' book collection, and in May, 1899, she reported she had replied to queries about a portrait in the collection.
