Marian and Louisa Compton letters and diary, 1867-1888.

The collection chiefly contains material written by Marian and Louisa Compton from Darmstadt, Germany, during protracted visits they made 1867-1888. These include Marian Compton's diary from 1873, a travel journal beginning in London and featuring descriptions of Darmstadt and Paggein; numerous issues of the 'Darmstadt Journal, ' dated 1867-1868, which the two girls produced to describe events and sights during their visits to Darmstadt; autograph of Prince Ludwig, Queen Victoria's son-in-law, 8 Sept. 1871. Also, various letters from Marian, written to her parents or her sister from Darmstadt and Paggein, chiefly 1872-1874, one illustrated with watercolor, another with pen; description of a visit by Marian and Louisa to Castle Hohenzollern, 1888; and letter to Marian and Louisa from Anna von Tirane, Darmstadt, 5 Oct. 1874.

Ludwig IV (b. 12 September 1837, Darmstadt, German Confederation-d. 13 March 1892, Darmstadt, German Empire) was the Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine. His parents were Prince Charles of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Elisabeth of Prussia. In 1862, Louis married Princess Alice, a daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.
