The New Albany and Salem Railroad Company was chartered in 1847 in Providence (now Borden), Ind. The railroad went into receivership in 1858 and was renamed the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railroad in 1859. The origin of the Monon Railroad dates back to 1847 with the founding of the New Albany and Salem Railroad in Borden, Ind. The railroad got its nickname "Monon" from a creek near Bradford, Ind. Alfter several mergers, expansions and reorganizations, the Monon became an independent line in 1946.
