Field notebooks, 1885-1950.

Series 1 of record group RG 81-69 consists of field notebooks (1885-1950) of observations of geologists and surveyors on such matters as the character of the terrain, type of vegetation, magnetic declination, rock or mineral types, cultural features, readings from well logs, the weather, samples collected, and traverses made. Notes are in textual and cartographic form, and all entries in the northern peninsula have been indexed down to the section level.

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
