Edward Hughes Thomson was born in Kendall, England, on June 15, 1810, and moved with his parents to Boston, Massachusetts, in 1813. After attending school and spending two years at sea, he studied law with Thomas T. Sherwood and Millard Fillmore. Born in Hamilton, New York on April 23, 1814, Bela Hubbard was the son of Thomas H. Hubbard. He came to Detroit in 1835. Bela Hubbard married Sarah E. Baughman of Adrian, Michigan on March 2, 1848.
