Correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs kept by Eugene Earle Stone, Traffic Manager, Eastern Air Transport, Inc., and Dexter C. Martin, Director of the S.C. Aeronautics Commission, illustrating the development of the airline service in S.C. Correspondents include Eddie Rickenbacker ("Captain Eddie"), the celebrated World War I pilot with 26 victories who left Eastern Airlines in 1963. Photographs and captions record 1946 "inaugural flight of Eastern into Columbia," and also from 1946, first flight from Miami to San Juan, Puerto Rico; exterior and interior shots, 1930s, of Curtiss Condor aircraft; "first commercial flight into South Carolina, Greenville, S.C." with stewardess; interior views of people smoking and relaxing also in Condor aircraft. Clippings also include brief published tourist guides, ca. 1940s, for Birmingham, Ala., and New York City. Three reports include 13-page essay, History of Eastern Air Lines, and Historical Background, 3 pages, [both ca. 1964?]; and Description of [Columbia, S.C.] Market [ca. 1966], 13 pages, re population growth and other economic conditions in the Midlands ca. 1930s-1960s; and list of significant developments in the aviation history of Charlotte, N.C.
