Virginia ex-slave interviews, 1937.

Include interviews from five former Virginia slaves from Petersburg and Norfolk, Va.; majority of the interviews were done in 1937 by Susie Byrd, a Works Progress Administration worker, through the Hampton Institute. Topics discussed are slave trading, slave discipline, slave involvement in the Civil War, an African-American (U.S.C.T.) regiment, violence towards Freedmen after emancipation, John Brown and Harper's Ferry, slave social customs, religion, runaways, a mulatto doctor, and folk songs. There is also a covering letter from Roscoe F. Lewis of the Hampton Institute to Professor A.A. Hill.
