My first play : manuscript, 1821.

Autograph manuscript of Charles Lamb's essay "My First Play," with his revisions and deletions, and signed "Elia," was sent through the post to Messrs. Taylor and Hessey for "The London Magazine" in 1821. The verso of the second leaf has the address and postmark, and the remains of the seal. "My First Play" was published in "The London Magazine," Dec. 1821 and reprinted in "Elia," 1823.

Charles Lamb was born to John and Elizabeth (Field) Lamb in London on February 10, 1775. Two of his siblings survived to adulthood, John (1763-1821) and Mary Ann (1764-1847).
