Manuscript in ink with engraved plate pasted down at front; a seemingly unpublished novel presented in the form of a memoir, written in the third person and concerning the misfortunes of Constant; the novel is preceded by a letter from Constant to his friend Tristan to whom he confides the following history; set in Caen in the ninth year of the republic and partly epistolary, it tells of the twenty-year-old hero's love for a young lady called Vermeille and details the course of their romance and the problems they encounter.
