Correspondence, autobiography, and historical narratives pertaining to the slavery dispute in Kansas, 1854-61; town building in the Territory; national politics; the Civil War & his sons' service in it; efforts to secure his son's release following the latter's imprisonment as a Union spy; the effect of his son's execution; and his reminiscences about early Kansas, 1854-61. Correspondents include his wife, Mary Ann Cozzens Brown; Kansas U.S. Senator Samuel C. Pomeroy; Kansas Territorial Governors Wilson Shannon & Samuel Medary; Franklin G. Adams, secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society (Topeka); and his son, Spencer Kellogg Brown.
