Buckingham, as the oldest living captain of a University of Tennessee football team, writes a complimentary letter to Bloom, a sports editor, recalling his own days as a sports reporter including the1908 wrestling match between Georges Hackenschmidt and Frank Gotch, golf with Christy Mathewson, picking all-Southern teams with Grant Rice, and the signing of Bill Terry by Kid Elberfield. He also mentions heavyweight champs Jim "Jeff" Jeffries, Bob "Fitz" Fitzsimmons, Jim Corbett and "Sailor" Tom Sharkey.
