Harry Innes was involved, at the time this letter was written, in what is now termed the Spanish Conspiracy. The conspiracy involved Kentucky petitioning to become an independent state and then entering into an alliance with Spain. William Berry Taylor was a lawyer and land speculator who migrated from Botetourt County, Virginia, to Shelby County, Kentucky, in the late eighteenth century. After migrating, Taylor continued to practice law in Virginia as well as Kentucky.
