Frederick Henry Wilkins collection, 1896-1939.

Collection of philologist, Frederick Henry Wilkens, consists entirely of research material that supported his study of German philology, beginning with his dissertation in 1891 until his death in 1939. Included in the collection are copies of medieval German and Latin books and charters, copies of manuscripts and documents, Wilkens's holographic notes, and copies of the research notes of German philologist, Eduard Sievers, dealing mostly with English literature. Most of the material is written in German, some in Latin, English, and Friesian. The collection has been artifically arranged into four series. Series 1: St. Gallen Charters contain copies of complete documents from the collection of ninth-century charters of the Stiftarchiv in St. Gallen, Switzerland and used by Wilkens for his dissertation. Series 2: German-Americans contains notebooks compiled by Wilkens and used during his research for "Early Influence of German Literature in America," published in 1900. Series 3: Eduard Sievers Research Material contains copies of Sievers's research notes mainly on English literature. Some describe the Old High German, Friesian, and Saxon influences on Shakespeare. The final series is Series 4: Medieval Studies. This is the largest series and includes notes; Medieval books, some with German influences in the text; and copies of religious documents and manuscripts.
