Annuities 1920s-1950s.

This series pertains to the annuity program of the Women's Missionary Society/United Lutheran Church Women (WMS/ULCA). Correspondence from 1935-1947 and 1955 pertains to a problem the society encountered starting in the early 1930s where it found itself having to pay more in the installments to annuitants than was being generated in income from the invested annuities. The correspondence includes reports from a WMS Annuity Committee charged with issuing recommendations for changes to the annuity program, letters from a United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA) Committee on Annuities that acted to ensure uniform issuance policies for all church boards issuing annuities, questions from synodical societies unsure of what to do with applications for annuities that arrived after a directive to cease issuing annuities, and a report and follow-up communications from a consulting actuary brought in by the WMS in 1942 to study the problem of its gift annuities. Primary authors of the correspondence are Alma S. Cook, Treasurer, WMS, and Nona Diehl, Executive Secretary, WMS. In addition to correspondence there are records pertaining to annuity statements of assets and earnings prepared for a board meeting in 1937, lists from 1937 and 1955 of annuity bonds issued by the WMS, samples of promotional pamphlets published and used by the WMS, and samples of blank annuity certificates issued to annuitants. There are also two booklets, Life Annuities, published by the Board of National Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., and Annuity Agreements of Charitable Organizations, published by the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America. The correspondence is in fair condition, but the remainder of the collection is in good condition. There is additional information pertaining to annuities issued by the WMS in ULCA 29/5/2, Financial Records.
