Cash Records 1921-1926.

This series consists of one bound cash record book with information kept for 1921-1926. It appears to pertain to persons working under the supervision of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension (BHMCE) of the United Lutheran Church in America (ULCA), but sponsored by the Women's Missionary Society (WMS) of the ULCA. Information in the ledger seems to indicate these persons had their salaries paid through appropriations from the WMS. The ledger also contains an entry titled, "Church Extension Receipts, etc. from WMS and Disbursements to WMS Missions." There is a typewritten letter in the front of the book that provides some explanation, but some of the information mentioned in the letter as being in the ledger is not found. There does not appear to be any itemized statements of monies due the Board of Home Missions or a list of women's missions showing vacancies. Because of this discrepancy, it cannot be ascertained that this ledger is indeed the one made referred to in the letter. The letter is from Anna K. Anderson, Office Secretary for Dr. J.F. Seibert, General Secretary of the BHMCE. It seems to indicate the cash book mentioned in it was maintained by the BHMCE and copies of the salary lists contained in it were sent monthly to Mrs. W.C. Weier, treasurer of the WMS. The recipient of this letter was the Reverend Z.M. Corbe. According to the 1928 ULCA Yearbook he was the treasurer of the newly formed Board of American Missions, which was the product of a merger in 1926 of the BHMCE and four other ULCA boards. It could be that this ledger was being transferred to the new Board of American Missions, and was not something maintained by the WMS. Since the custodian of this ledger cannot be ascertained and its provenance is unknown, this cannot be confirmed. Persons should take this discrepancy concerning the ledger's ownership into consideration when examining these records.
