Sumner Chilton Powell papers, 1946-1972.

The collection consists largely of research material collected by Sumner Chilton Powell to be used for his published work, "Puritan Village; The Formation of a New England Town." Included in the collection are maps, photographs, microfilm, statistics and miscellaneous data, records, and legal documents, 1600-1700. The documents, in the form of photostats, are mostly concerned with Sudbury, Suffolk, England and Sudbury, Mass. and include court records, town council records, and churchwardens accounts. Manuscript material includes drafts of early chapters. Final items are student notes from Amherst, 1946, and a typescript of Powell's thesis from Harvard.

Sumner Chilton Powell was an author and historian. He was born in Northampton, Mass., Oct. 2, 1924. Powell received the B.A. degree from Amherst in 1946 and his Ph. D. from Harvard in 1956. Powell taught in boys' schools in New England and was an instructor in history at Yale University (1960-1962) and Iona College (1964-1967). Powell was the author of several historical works.
