Letter from Hutchins to his wife while en route to Calif. shortly after the discovery of gold. He explains that he has just come from Wisconsin, is setting out for Calif. (mostly due to his unhappiness in Melmore), and hopes to be back in a year. He informs her about land that he owns in both Ohio and Wisc. and provides names of agents for the land. Hutchins mentions that there is much cholera in the area, which is the cause of an acquaintance's death.
