Matthews family : papers, 1912-1941.

Collection consists of letters, pamphlets, essays, advertising and fund raising cards. The letters concern African-American school affairs, Central High School, as well as civic, church, and YMCA activities. Included is a report from the Kentucky Commission on Interracial Cooperation on housing and home life conditions in Ky. and Louisville. The collection gives an overview of African-American aspirations and involvement in the Louisville area in the early 20th century.

The YMCA, established at Oberlin College in 1881, and the YWCA, established in 1894, were voluntary associations of students dedicated to social and religious work for the purpose of building Christian character in their members. Oberlin College provided on-campus quarters for both organizations, whose staffs were paid out of an annual grant from the College. Under the presidency of William E. Stevenson (1946-59), the relationship of the YMCA and YWCAs to the larger religious life of the College...
