Memoirs (typed copy) recounting his boyhood in Ky., with details of life and customs; experience in the fur trade; service as a member of the Ky. legislature and as Ky. secretary of state; and appointment by President Pierce as governor of the New Mexico Territory. About half of the narrative is devoted to his activities in New Mexico, recalling journeys across the country, relations with the Indians and with the Mexican government, the Gadsden Purchase, deliverance of Indian captives, a controversy with Kit Carson, and other matters.

The John Breathitt that kept this journal is most likely the sameperson who became Kentucky's governor in 1832. His death in 1834 made him the second of the Commonweath's governors to die in office.
