Included are a printed broadside proclaiming Thursday, 25 Nov. 1875 "as a day of Thanksgiving. . ." asking all Kentuckians to cease secular activities for that day; a 9 Aug. 1877 letter to General Basil Duke discussing military organizations wishing to be special police in Louisville and the reason why the governor will not arm them; an 1877 commission appointing James B. Bell as commissioner of deeds; and a 14 Apr. 1914 letter to George T. Settle concerning the transfer of a bust of Abraham Lincoln to the Louisville Free Public Library in accordance with a resolution adopted by the General Assembly.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. James Bennett McCreary (July 8, 1838 - October 8, 1918) was born in Richmond, Kentucky, the son of Dr. Edmund R. and Sabrina (Bennett) McCreary. During the Civil War, McCreary served with John Hunt Morgan in the 11th Kentucky Cavalry. He served as Governor of Kentucky from 1875-1879 and 1911-1915. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1884-1897. He also served in the US Senate 1903-1909. In 1914, McCreary ran for the US Senate, but lost. He died in Richmond in 1918. From ...
