Pacifist and suffragist, Mead devoted much of her life to social reform. She served as president of the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association (1903-1909) and supported many other organizations, including the Women's Municipal League, the Women's Educational and Industrial Union (Boston), the Consumers' League, the NAACP, and the American Civil Liberties Union.
