John P. Morton of Lexington, Kentucky, worked as a clerk in the bookstore of W.W. Worsley. When Worsley moved his store to Louisville in 1825, Morton went with him, becoming manager of the store the following year. Between 1832 and 1838 the firm was known as Morton and Smith. John Mason Brown was born in Frankfort, Ky., 26 April 1837, the son of Mason and Mary (Yoder) Brown. He graduated from Yale College in 1856. He returned to Frankfort where he taught school and studied law. In April, 1860, he opened a law practice in St. Louis, Mo.
