Letter, 2 Jan. 1849.

Letter to James Taylor, son of General James Taylor of Newport (Ky.), written by Spencer R. Hughey for William P. Hughey to inform him that he was empowered by General Taylor to bring a suit against Col. Joseph Barbour, a saw mill owner, for trespassing on his land. Joseph R. Underwood also filed suit. Letter also describes a dispute between Hughey and a Mr. Cooksey over a ferry leased to Hughey by General Taylor.

James Taylor, the son of Col. James Taylor, was born on Apr. 19, 1769 in Caroline County, Virginia. He was educated at Rappahannock Academy. In 1788 Taylor was commissioned as surveyor of Caroline County and was made deputy sheriff. He moved to Kentucky in 1792 and settled on the forks between the Licking and Ohio Rivers, founding the town of Newport. He made a fortune in Kentucky land transactions.
