Account files collection, 1885-1987 and undated, bulk 1920-1979.

An artificially-created collection of information about client accounts held by the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) and provides information about JWT's management of its advertising campaigns. The collection includes account histories, research reports, memoranda, correspondence, printed material, clippings, brochures and pamphlets, product labels and packaging designs. Additionally, the files document deliberations about such topics as media selection, markets, and target audience for individual advertising campaigns. Typically, client case histories begin by describing in brief the client's own corporate or organizational history, its product(s), and its marketing efforts prior to engaging JWT's services. There follows, in most cases, a discussion of JWT's advertising campaigns for that client, along with the rationale behind the various marketing strategies employed and sales figures for evaluating their success. The largest account files are those relating to Chesebrough-Pond's, Inc.; the General Cigar Company; the Andrew Jergens Company; Oneida Limited; Pan American World Airways; Standard Brands, Inc.; and the United States Playing Card Company. The collection was compiled from a number of sources over an extended period of time. Several JWT employees were involved in the files' creation, including Henry Miner, Howard Henderson, John Monsarrat, and William C. McKeehan. Most of the accounts represented in the collection were serviced by JWT's New York office, but the files also include some documents from accounts held at other U.S. offices. The collection is incomplete in that it does not contain files for all JWT accounts past or present, and the amount of information about some clients is very limited. Arranged alphabetically by client; then by record type as appropriate (account history, correspondence, memoranda, reports, or printed material). The company names used in the container list are the last names by which the companies were known while clients of JWT.
