Business, shipping, and miscellaneous papers of a Maine sea captain. Business papers consist of correspondence unrelated to specific vessels. Most of the ship's papers relate to the ship Africa, including letters to Jordan from his brother Harvey Jordan, and from Capt. Charles N. Bates, as well as accounts, insurance policies, and a copy of the Africa's log regarding its wreck in 1860. The correspondence discusses trade on board the Africa to India, Great Britain, Mauritius, Cuba, Boston, and New York; Capt. Harvey Jordan's concern for his wife's health while she was on board the Africa; and his sudden death in New Orleans in 1858. Other ship's papers include letters from Bates, accounts, and an insurance policy for the bark Greenland; articles of agreement, Savannah to Providence, for the brig Josephine; and a protest and survey in Rio de Janeiro for the schooner A.N. Jordan. The miscellaneous papers include a collection of 96 visiting cards; letters from the Portland Steamship Co. (1907); and bills from the Eastern Steamship Co. (1907) and Prince's Express Co. (1903-14).
