The National Congress of Neighborhood Women Records date from 1974 to the present documenting it's early history; national and international programs; and local programs in Brooklyn, N.Y. Types of material include administrative correspondence, minutes, publications, project reports, funding proposals, financial records, subject files, photographs and audiovisual material. The collection offers valuable source material for the study of grassroots activism; working-class feminist organizing; urban studies; and women in community development. These are also a rich source of material on the formation of a grassroots organization, offering a fascinating view of its inner workings, with all of the personal and political dynamics that come with incorporating a feminist consciousness into an organization, and where issues of class, race and ethnicity are acknowledged and openly discussed.

The Third United Nations World Conference on Women took place between 15 and 26 July 1985 in Nairobi, Kenya. The Forward-looking Strategies for the Advancement of Women was adopted by consensus. The conference marked the first time that lesbian rights were introduced in a UN official meeting and the turning-point for violence against women to emerge from being a hidden topic into one which needed to be addressed.
