The North Dakota Sanborn Fire Insurance Map Collection contains Sanborn fire insurance maps for cities and towns in North Dakota, spanning the years 1884-1969. The maps depict the arrangement of blocks and buildings for the cities and towns. Most maps in this collection are hard copies, but others are on one reel of microfilm. This reel is stored in Special Collections Family History/Genealogy Room. Hard copies are stored in folders in the Special Collections map files.

The Sanborn Map Company was founded in 1867 with headquarters in New York City. Its purpose was to produce maps that would show "at a glance the character of the fire insurance risks of all buildings" in a give community. Since these maps had a very specialized use, "there were usually fewer than twenty orders for a single map sheet".
