Consists of the records of the national offices of the Presbyterian Church in the USA (PCUSA) and the United Presbyterian Church in the USA (UPCUSA) that dealt with and administered the work of the church in health, education and welfare. The record group also documents the initiative and support of the church in the sale of the United Mine Workers Union hospitals in Appalachia to the Appalachian Regional Hospitals, Inc. (ARHI) and includes the history of most of the schools and colleges supported by the church.

From 1867 to 1878, women organized local mission societies that supported home mission schools. The Woman's Executive Committee was organized in 1878 and administered and supported mission schools in cooperation with the Board of Home Missions.
