Fears that the "April 19th Souvenir"is to be too "draggy". Well send it to him and he can deside if he wants to put it in "The Journal". Adds that if the Souvenir matter still comes up after the poem is printed elsewhere, it could still be included.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
