Children's author Walt Morey was born in Hoquiam, Washington, in 1907. His varied work experiences, which included factory work, forestry, prizefighting, theater management, and deep sea diving, provided Morey with material for stories. After years of writing for pulp magazines, he turned to writing juvenile fiction. Morey's book Gentle Ben became a success and a lasting children's classic.
