[Letter] 1875 June 3, Providence, R.I. : [from] Zachariah Allen [to] Samuel Webber.

Allen notes that he has written to several old machinists for information requested by Webber about the history of mules, ring spinners, etc. Letter mentions William Mason of Taunton, Mass., founder of Wm. Mason and Co. (later Mason Machine Works); and Ira Gay of Pawtucket, R.I., and later Nashua, N.H., who constructed a self-acting mule in Nashua. Gay founded the Ira Gay Machine Shop in Chelmsford, Mass., later Gay, Silver and Co.
