Papers, 1948-1988.

The Alice Gorton Hart papers consist of personal journals and notebooks, with inserts, dated from 1948 to 1988. Her undergraduate life at Smith is well documented. Notebooks and papers from her classes, programs, and photographs provide an excellent insight into life at Smith in the 1950s. Her later journals document her life in marriage and her struggle to come to terms with her life and its confinement, a sometimes adversarial relationship with her husband, and her close, open relationship with her parents, especially with her mother. There are also poems and writings and a letter from Aldous Huxley. In a letter to the Sophia Smith Collection in 1983, Alice described her journals as reflecting "a great deal of philosophical change in women's lives ... [and the] impact of the women's movement on a well educated normal wife/mother in a conservative environment who read, wrote, worked, raged, and changed."
