Matthew Naythons photographic archive

circa 1963-2015

The Matthew Naythons photographic archive consists of materials from both Naythons’ photojournalism career (1968-1986) and his later work as a publisher and producer (1986-present). Materials present in the collection include negatives, transparencies, photographic prints, and contact sheets; correspondence with and biographical profiles of photographers and writers; business records and copyright documentation (including model releases); manuscripts and proofs for publications; and various audiovisual and digital media. Naythons’ own photographic work documents the Fall of Saigon, the Yom Kippur War, the Nicaraguan revolution, and the aftermath of the Jonestown massacre, among other turbulent political events of the late 1970s. His production work documents different medical cultures around the world, medical dilemmas in times of war, presidential campaigns and inaugurations, educational techniques, and aspects of different cultures and religions. The business files for such book projects as The Power to Heal, The Face of Mercy: A History of Medicine at War, Sarajevo: A Portrait of Siege, and Christmas Around the World present a detailed and extensive record of the complexities and challenges involved in their creation. Also included are exhibit prints and museum exhibit materials related to some of the photographic and publishing works documented in the collection.

Barack H. Obama is the 44th President of the United States. Few presidents have walked a more improbable path to the White House. Born in Hawaii to a mother from Kansas and a father from Kenya, Obama was raised with help from his grandparents, whose generosity of spirit reflected their Midwestern roots. The homespun values they instilled in him, paired with his innate sense of optimism, compelled Obama to devote his life to giving every child, regardless of his or her background, the same cha...

After obtaining his medical degree from Hahnemann University in 1972, he began working on a month-by-month basis in an emergency room, a schedule that allowed him to take on freelance photojournalism assignments. During those years, he documented many inter...
