The company, located in New York City, was founded in 1899 by John P., Nathaniel and Samuel Stevens as the family-controlled selling agent for fabrics produced by M.T. Henry Hale Stevens worked in a North Andover, Mass., flannel factory in the 1830's and 1840's. While traveling abroad in 1845, he became interested in mechanized linen production and purchased machinery in Ireland.
