Papers of Richard Bland Lee, 1790-1826.

The collection contains an autograph manuscript "Notes to an original Federalist of the old school," apparently a draft of an address by Lee on the nation's fiftieth anniversary. Letters to Zaccheus Collins; Thomas Jones; Theodorick Lee; James Madison; his wife, Elizabeth Collins Lee; and his son, Z. Collins Lee mention a bill in favor of the Potomac as a site for the federal city; the possible tour of James Madison through the Eastern states, the excise tax, bank bill, George Washington, and selection of a site for the federal city; and the deaths of his mother and of Mr. Lewis and his concern to secure someone else to care for his plantation affairs at "Sully" and "Lee Hall." Also the conduct of Citizen Genet and the proceedings of the Indian Commissioners; a request to Madison for a civil government position; a request for an appointment as commissioner of claims for property destroyed in the War of 1812; a description of Kentucky in 1820; and advice to his son attending the University of Virginia in 1826.
