The narrators of this interview, Dr. C. Frederick Irons and Dr. Malene Grant Irons, were long time health care providers in Greenville, North Carolina. The first interview gives insight into Dr. Frederick Irons' childhood in West Virginia and Dr. Malene Irons' childhood in North Carolina. The Irons tell of their high school and medical education and how they met at the Medical College of Virginia. The second interview gives insight into the sister relationship between Dr. Malene Grant Irons and Dr. Isa Grant, the Irons' tenure at the Home for the Incurables in Richmond, Virginia, and Dr. Malene Irons' service at the children's hospitals in Richmond. It gives insight into the treatment of pneumonia, tuberculosis, and meningitis at that time.The third interview gives insight into the hardships Dr. Malene Grant Irons and Dr. Isa Grant faced to be accepted into school and work their way through school, Dr. Malene's and Dr. Frederick's lives together in their college years, and their first years working at the hospital on Johnston Street. They discuss Dr. Frederick Iron's service in the Army Reserves with the 56th General Hospital and Dr. Malene Irons' life and medical practice while he was overseas. The fourth interview gives insight into the Irons' lives when they first moved to Greenville, North Carolina. Included in the interview is a discussion of the move from the hospital on Johnston Street to the new Pitt Memorial Hospital building on Fifth Street. Other information included in this interview pertains to Dr. Frederick Irons' experience as an East Carolina College physician and Dr. Malene Irons' experience at the Developmental Evaluation Clinic. The sixth interview gives insight into the development of the nursing and medical schools at East Carolina University, Dr. Frederick Irons' experiences at the East Carolina University Infirmary, Dr. Malene Irons' experiences as she taught community health education classes, and their community involvement during their retirement. The information contained in these interviews are relevant to the years 1913 - 1998.
