Was happy to receive her letter. Talks abbout Carrie's baby and how difficult it was for Carrie. Mrs. Walker is helping out. Goes on to talk about the Normal school. Asks if she should let the carpender do the work for $300-$400 at her premises.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
