Has sweet memories of the visit with her and Lusie. Mrs. Payne had told her about the swell reception they had. Wished she could have been there. The "riot" at the Normal did not do much for them. Asks for her new address.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
