Correspondence, 1860-1868.

The Lanman correspondence consists of twelve hand-written letters from ten United States Representatives to Charles Lanman. The letters provide Lanman with information for their biographies which Lanman used in his book, the Dictionary of the United States Congress and the General Government (1868). In addition to the letters, short, typewritten biographies of the letter-writers are included. Five of the letter-writers are from New Mexico. The letters in this collection are from the following people: Charles P. Clever, (1830-1874), Jose Francisco Chaves, (1833-1904), Miguel Antonio Otero, (1829-1882), Richard Hanson Weightman, (1816-1861), Francisco Perea, (1830-1913), Charles D. Potson, (1825-1902), Stephen Fowler Wilson, (1821-1897), Coles Bashford, (1816-1878), John Sebrie Watts, (1816-1876), John Sebrie Watts, (1816-1876), and William S. Messervy.

José Francisco Chaves (June 27, 1833 – November 26, 1904) was a nineteenth-century military leader, politician, lawyer and rancher from the New Mexico Territory. Francisco Perea (January 9, 1830 – May 21, 1913) was an American businessman and politician, serving first in the House of the New Mexico Territory after the area's acquisition by the United States following the Mexican–American War. During the American Civil War, Perea was commissioned as a Union Army lieutenant colonel, helping to defend the Territory. Richard Hanson Weightman served as an officer in the Mexican War. He settled in New Mexico in 1849, and in 1850 he was chosen as a United States senator during New Mexico's unsuccessful application for statehood. Born in St. Louis, Mo. in 1849. His family moved to New Mexico in 1851. Otero's first job was working as a bookkeeper wit the family firm, Otero, Sellar & Company. He entered politics in 1883 as City Treasurer of Las Vegas. In 1897 he was appointed Territorial Governor of New Mexico, remained so until 1906. He remained active in politics throughout his life.
