ArchivalResource

Papers of John S. Mosby, 1881-1916.

The papers consist chiefly of letters to Mosby's grandsons Mosby and Spottswood Campbell. Mosby writes about family, health, lectures, progress on his memoirs, illness and death of his son, news from old friends, finances, and the use of his friends as business contacts for his grandsons. Mosby comments on Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Lady Astor, national politics, "preparedness," German naval warfare and the outbreak of World War I; and Edwin A. Alderman and the University of Virginia. Of interest are brief mentions of his time in the Albemarle County jail, the capture of General Wells, the two battles of Manasses, the 1913 Gettysburg reunion, and his offering financial incentives to his grandsons to read Sir Walter Scott's novels. Letters to him include notes of congratulations or thanks from E.A. Alderman, W. Cameron Forbes, Henry Carter Stuart and Frederick Dent Grant, and a letter on England and World War I from Lady Astor.
