Richard Bachenheimer papers, 1925-1954 (bulk 1953-1954).

Field notes, correspondence, drafts of reports and papers, and other materials related to Bachenheimer's research in India as a Fulbright scholar working with U.C. professor David Mandelbaum. Materials contain information on social structures, homes, agriculture, irrigation, kinship, caste, market reports, and village life, especially in Adoni and Ingaladahal in southern India. Also includes oversize maps of Hyderabad and Madras. A significant amount of the correspondence is between Mandelbaum and Bachenheimer.

Professor David Goodman Mandelbaum was one of the first cultural anthropologists to undertake ethnographic research in India. He studied at Northwestern and Yale Universities. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in India and Burma. He taught at the University of Minnesota before coming to the University of California, Berkeley.
