Stevenson writes to his father, Thomas Stevenson, giving a description of Frankfurt where he is studying with his friend, Walter Simpson; reporting on the progress of his books and their publication, including a story in French, a "memoir" of Fleeming Jenkin, and problems with "Kidnapped"; and inquiring into his parents' activities, including an engineering paper his father is writing. He frequently mentions family, friends and his desire to come home to Scotland and occasionally alludes to his health.
