Samuel tells Edwin that he has been working on another text book. He discusses it and it deals with leading American poets. He tried to speak to his students and friends at the Metropolitan Art Museun on "poetry and Spirituality in painting by George Inness. He refers to Swedenborg ideas. He is going to New York to teach in the Union Theological Seminary, at Columbia Univ.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
