Letters to Manuel J. de la Madrid : ALS, 1847-1860.

Ten letters addressed to Manuel J. de la Madrid from various correspondents. Two letters from J. Mendoza Cortina and Antonio Algara, 1847, describe the siege of Mexico City, the approach of American troops to Chapultepec Castle, and the tension existing in the Mexican capital during the Mexican-American War. One letter from Jose Fons, 1849, documents the effects of the California Gold Rush over Mexican and European population. Also, three letters written by foreign businessmen, Goerne Stephenson and J.R. Moeller, comment on the incidents of the Three Years War in Mexico, 1858-1860, and show the concern of the merchants regarding loans frequently requested by the Mexican government, as well as their opinion of the military actions of both liberals and conservatives. Finally, three letters, 1857, written by a notable Mexican politician and diplomat, Jose Gomez de la Cortina (some letters signed Conde de la Cortina), and by a Spanish poet, Jose Zorrilla. These letters concern personal affairs among Cortina, Zorrilla, and Madrid.
