Hong Kong Controversy Files 1974-1977.

The majority of the records are correspondence and meeting minutes that pertain to the Hong Kong controversy itself. In addition to correspondence there are copies of minutes from Hong Kong Mission General Conference and Executive Council meetings. There is correspondence to Partners in Mission (PIM), which indicated that PIM's role in the crisis was that of offering whatever support was needed. The records in box 1 appear to contain the majority of official correspondence from PIM, with the Rev. Paul Strege and the Rev. Jim Mayer as the authors. Box 2 contains mostly correspondence to and from Pastor Strege marked "personal" and "confidential." In addition to the records relating to the schism in the LCMS-related church in Hong Kong, other major subjects found in the records include minutes and correspondence pertaining to the Tokyo Conference of Presidents of LCMS-related Lutheran churches in March 1975, and correspondence and meeting minutes pertaining to a controversy involving the termination of Dr. Thomas Coates, a professor at Concordia Seminary, Hong Kong. There are records in English and Chinese. Given the passage of time, items marked "confidential" are no longer considered as such. Other significant correspondents include Dr. Waldo Werning, the Rev. Andrew Chiu, the Rev. Martin Chiang, the Rev. James W. Mayer, Dr. J.A.O. Preus, Dr. Thomas Coates, Dr. Herman Koppelmann, and Dr. William H. Kohn. Records are arranged chronologically and duplicates were removed.
