California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Zona Gale was a prominent writer and political activist born in Portage, Wisconsin. Gale attended the University of Wisconsin and worked as a reporter in Milwaukee. Gale, a lifelong friend of Jane Addams, became involved in the fight for the women's vote and eventually went to work for the writer Edmund Clarence Stedman.
