Lettersheet (3 p.) with print of lithograph on separate page, "View of the Plaza of San-Francisco, on the 4th of July 1851," with letter which refers to recent events as well as news concerning friends and acquaintances. Thomas writes that he has not worked for over a month and is about to leave for the mines. He is tired of the country because of nothing to do, but wants to "get something out of it" before he comes home (location not given). Also, Thomas mentions that four men have been hanged by the Vigilance Committee since June 9 (the first two named Jenkins and Stewart [i.e. Stuart]), and that recent hangings occurred when 30 Committee members took two men from prison the day before their scheduled hanging and hanged them without opposition from the authorities. He also mentions that three men were hanged recently in Sacramento, even though one of the suspects had received a reprieve from the Governor. In addition, Thomas writes of the ships in the San Francisco harbor and refers in particular to the ships Flying Cloud, Witchcraft, and Surprise.
